PSA: Beware of "Slight Change" Email Scams

Please be aware of a surge in business and personal payment scams. Criminals are becoming more sophisticated, and are using email addresses that look almost identical to those of legitimate companies or contacts. Often, they alter just one letter or character, so small that it can easily be overlooked. These scams will target victims by posing as companies they know the person has done business with in the past.

These scams can target anyone conducting financial transactions, including invoice payments, wire transfers, and other business or personal payments. Victims receive emails requesting payment or sensitive information that appear authentic.

Ways to protect yourself:

  • Check the email address carefully. Look for subtle changes in spelling, extra characters, or unusual domains.
  • Verify before paying. Contact the company or individual using known phone numbers or official emails-do not reply directly to the suspicious email.
  • Be cautious with urgent requests. Scammers often pressure victims to act quickly.
  • Use multi-factor authentication. This adds an extra layer of protection for your accounts.
  • Report suspicious emails. Forward scam emails to your IT department, company security team, or law enforcement.

Remember: If an email looks "almost right" but something feels off, pause and verify. A single misplaced letter can cost thousands. Don't let scammers exploit small details-they rely on you acting too quickly while upset over the initial shock of the fake notice.

Stay vigilant. Protect your money. Protect your information.
