Batesville Fire Department personnel responded to a house fire on Broadwater Lane on Tuesday evening, 9/1/2026, and extinguished the blaze.

During a cleanup operation the following day, a family member of the homeowners discovered what appeared to be a hand grenade among the fire debris. It was unknown at the time whether
the device was live or inert.

Shortly afterward, the fire reignited, and the fire department responded to assess the scene. Upon learning of the possible hand grenade, the Batesville Police Department became involved and coordinated with fire personnel to address the situation.

Because of the potential hazard posed by the suspected explosive device, fire operations were conducted from a safe distance to protect a nearby residence and surrounding area.
