Public Notice: Scam Phone Calls Impersonating Police Officers
WARNING:
The Batesville Police Department wants the public to be aware of ongoing scam phone calls in which individuals falsely claim to be police officers or employees. In these calls, scammers tell victims they have an outstanding warrant or missed jury duty before demanding immediate payment to "resolve" the issue.
Please be advised:
• The Batesville Police Department will never call and demand payment to clear a warrant, avoid arrest, or resolve a legal matter.
• We do not accept payment over the phone, by gift cards, prepaid cards, cryptocurrency, or electronic transfer services.
• Law enforcement officers do not threaten arrest over the phone or instruct individuals to keep the call confidential.
• Legitimate warrants are served in person, not resolved through phone calls or electronic payments.
If you receive a call of this nature:
• Hang up immediately.
• Never provide personal or financial information.
• Do not send money or engage further with the caller.
If you believe you have been targeted or have already provided information or payment, please contact your local law enforcement agency immediately to report the incident. You may also report scam activity to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
We encourage residents to share this information with family members, friends, and especially elderly relatives, who are often targeted by these scams. For questions or concerns, don't hesitate to get in touch with the Batesville Police Department at (870)569-8111.
